THE BALM BRAND REVIEW FEAT. BAHAMA MAMA, MARY-LOU MANIZER AND MORE

theBalm history is a simple one. Marissa Shipman (founder of the brand) worked in TV and lived in New York. She decided there's more to makeup than what meets the eye back in 2003. She wanted affordable, quality product that make every women glamorous in 5 minutes. With that philosophy in mind, she bought several "how to make my own makeup" books off Amazon and in her kitchen her first lip balm was made and company name theBalm arrived. 13 years forward and theBalm is a synonym of pin up beauty with Marissa inspirations behind every product taken from the real need, filling  the gap in the market.

I like theBalm as a brand. The packaging is something that is important to me. When I first started in beauty, the idea was: the more, the better. I, now look for the originality, for that something extra that catches the eye and fills the need. I look at my vast collection and slowly realise it is too much, so when shopping for makeup I look for innovation, something to crab my attention. Enter theBalm.

Packaging wise it's hard to find something cute, travel friendly and attention catching. theBalm does it in a very special way. Forget luxurious brand packaging, the pin up design, hardened cardboard is of great quality and fun at the same time. They're light and travel friendly without compromising on quality. There's always a mirror hidden inside. This is the product you are supposed to stuff in your makeup bag. It's your five minute miracle. During my time in the beauty world I accommodated several products in my collection. Some I love, some I like. There's no denying the beauty of them.

When it comes to theBalm, I mainly think face products. I fell in love with Mary-Lou Manizer the moment I laid eyes on it. It's a finely milled, champagne coloured highlight that's a beauty must have for any makeup enthusiast. You've seen it everywhere. It's this one highlight shade that suits all. I've seen it on palest on skins as well as medium tones - it gives the most beautiful shine to all. There's no glitter to it, it gives you the finish any highlighter should, the effect of wet skin. It stays put all day and it's super pigmented so if you're after a delicate daytime highlight, make sure you practice the application, as light hand is needed. Best brushes are either fan or duo fibres, however I use it with a dense brush. I don't mind the shine, in fact, the more the better. A year, year and a half ago the Mary-Lou Manizer taken the crown in the highlight world, as there were little to none products that worked quite like it and were on that medium price scale. Now a little forgotten in the world of strobing, it's still one I love and go for a lot. BUY IT HERE.

Contouring hit and there were only few matte bronzers at the time to fill the need for it. Bahama Mama has quickly became a staple for it's olive toned shade, not too warm and matte. You've seen it everywhere and for the good reason. It is still one of the best contouring products in the beauty industry. I don't use it nearly enough anymore as I discovered lighter and more cool toned shades now, that suit my super pale complexion better than Bahama Mama, but there's no denying, she was my first 'official' contouring goddess and still holds a spot near my heart. It's another super pigmented product and I can't stress it enough - you need a light hand using it, as if applied too generously, it's really hard to blend. I find fluffy and duo fiber brushes the best to tame the Bahama Mama. BUY IT HERE.

Swatches natural light no flash, from left: Mr Write Now Brian, Balm Desert,
Frat Boy, Bahama Mama, Mary-Lou Manizer
For a while Bahama Mama was the only bronzer in theBalm family, until early last year when Balm Desert was released. It is a satin finish bronzer of warm tones, but also lighter in tone to it's precedor. I only have a sample, but I really loved it in the summer. It's a great product, f you're pale and looking to warm up the complexion. It really gives that tan finish to the skin. BUY IT HERE

theBalm blushes taken the makeup world by storm and most shades became cult must haves really quickly. The quirky packaging, funny names as with other products help with marketing surely, but the quality of the product is what I'm here to talk about. I own many blushes and Frat Boy is one I seem to go for more often than others. It's a beautiful coral shade, super pigmented, but if applied with large duo fiber brush it gives only the flush of colour to my cheeks. The shade is just perfect for my everyday needs. BUY IT HERE.

I picked up Mr Write Now in the shade Brian on a recommendation by one of the beauty bloggers. I was on a look out for a quality beige waterline liner forever and having had no luck in drugstore I decided it was the time to spend just a little extra on a product that's beige, matte and has an actual staying power. I've never looked back. I've had it for a year now and I still use it. It has a creamy formula and applies evenly on the waterline. It sets pretty quickly, so couple of strokes is all you need to really open the eye with it. It's to date the most natural looking beige waterline liner I own. I'm sure to test more over the years, but until I'm done with Brian, I just don't see a need to try any others. I see mixed reviews of this liner and yes I agree to some extent. It's not the most creamy formula on the market, but it just works and stays put. I have quite sensitive and watery eyes so for me the longevity is the key with any waterline products and Brian has been the one for a year now. BUY IT HERE.

I saved probably the most disappointing product for last, as I tend to digress from negativity here, unless I really have to. theBalm Nude'tude was the first of the kind palette on the market and it's still a staple for many. I can see the allure. The packaging is to die for, it's super quirky with it's Naughty and Nice versions. I'm a grown ass woman - I went for naughty lol. I'm glad this palette was part of one of the beauty boxes I subscribe to, as I would probably skip on testing it otherwise. It's not a bad palette. All shades are pigmented and blend beautifully. However the lack of matte shades, as there's only couple here, does put a dent in it for me. I experienced a lot of fall out with all darker shades, mattes included and all shimmers. For that, I rarely go for Nude'tude. There are few special shades that I adore in there though with Sassy (white shimmer), Sultry (medium matte, warm camel brown) and Sexy (burgundy matte) leading the way. These are the only shades I go for in this palette, therefore I can't honestly recommend it as a whole. It's still a great palette, just not fully worth the investment in my eyes. BUY IT HERE.

OVERVIEW:

theBalm will always have a special place close to my heart for it's innovative and fun products. I still love and use them all. It's now widely available in UK, be that in Superdrug on Feel Unique to name just a few. Is it still the brand to go for innovation? Not anymore. Beauty industry have caught up and many drugstore and luxury brands offer what theBalm used to offer. Don't get me wrong, there are still great quality, pigmented formulas and real pleasure to work with, so if you're looking for good quality at reasonable price, theBalm fills that void nicely. It's cheaper than MAC and slightly more expensive than your usual drugstore. If I could choose my personal heroes, it would be Mary-Lou Manizer, my first real highlighter love and Mr Write Brian - still the only beige waterline pencil I go for.

Happy Spring my Queens! I can't believe we've made it! FEBRUARY EDIT: GLOWING SKIN, SMOKEY EYES & BEAUTY DRAMA QUEEN GONE LIVE

February Edit: beauty to make your skin glow

Happy 1st day of March my Queens! I can almost feel spring coming and it makes me so happy! February was a great month. Month of discoveries, new beginnings (hello new site and template!) and generally positive and awesome time!

BEAUTYDRAMAQUEEN.COM

I thought I'll start today with something I am extremely proud of and that is the revealing of BeautyDramaQueen.com. I have had my doubts and delayed this for months, but once it launched, I could not be happier. I am my own worst critic, so this needed to work on many levels. I knew what I wanted and decided to go with Pipdig, as it was recommended to me by my support group and truly members of a family: Dagmara and Siobhan. All the changes couldn't happen without you and Leanne supporting me along the way! I'm super grateful to you for everything! I'll link all the girls in the Friendly blogger section at the bottom of the post, so please give them a visit, stay a while and most definitely subscribe as they're not only great friends but bloody great bloggers!

Pipdig was a great choice and I love the template, I really like the main page where you can browse through few latest posts, see some in the top slider as well as easily follow my social media, search the blog for products  and even quickly check out my Instagram! I like the white background, the clarity of the finished look and the ease of use it created. I think it looks modern and suits me and my aesthetics well. I have to be honest, I expected a slightly better help from Pipdig itself as the questions I've asked were answered but in a way, I couldn't apply it myself, so I had to resort to countless Google searches. If there was one complaint I have, it's that.

GLOWING SKIN EDIT

All the glow getters you need this month

February was a month of skincare discoveries and I honestly couldn't be happier with my skin right now. Dehydration is gone people, GONE! I am so pleased with how glowing my complexion is and it truly shows. I've been getting all the compliments lately and obviously there's a lot of factors that come into play here, but these few products have revolutionised my routine.

I can't stop singing praises to this little gem. Firstly the packaging, which I find super modern and I like the design. What makes the product in my opinion is airtight pump. You pay for the amazing ingredients, so you  want to ensure they don't oxidise with time and constant air flow. Also there's the factor of keeping your skincare without any external factors like bacteria, which air pump protect from. Two pumps is enough for me to apply over my face and the neck. I have been applying it over my usual serum and before moisturiser. You could probably skip moisturiser but I love layering my dry skin with products, especially overnight as this product has been designed for. I discussed all the ingredients and the benefits of them in my previous post here, but I'll mention few again for the new readers. First of all Retinol aka Vit A is a tricky ingredient to do right. It is THE ONLY proven ingredient in terms of anti-ageing and it works at the deeper level of skin than most. Because of the strength of it, it can also be super drying. The genius behind Merumaya (looking at you Maleka!) understood that by combining it with super moisturising ingredients that work together with Retinol and not against it, you can produce a treatment that has all the anti-ageing benefits of retinol whilst keeping drying effects at bay. And it works. I have a dry skin and I have not experience any side effects. It works beautifully on me and on my few lines that I got, especially smile lines and around forehead. I'll give it 5* as I can't believe how good this is!

Lacura Caviar Illumination Day RPR £6.99 | POST

My little hero as of late, that's cheaper than a price of cocktail in Alchemist (new and awesome cocktail bar in the city centre of Birmingham, conveniently located 2 minutes away from where I work!). Lacura Caviar Illumination Day with SPF15 has become a staple in my morning routine. Using it for only few weeks, I saw extreme brightening resulting in glowing complexion. I have ranted about how much I love it already here, so please check out for more in-depth review. I really enjoy using it under a foundation and it works especially well under L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation, which I don't use a primer with anymore as with Lacura moisturiser I have no need for it. These two work brilliantly together, giving me the best complexion to date. Not available online sadly and only in store in your local Aldi.

I really love a good sheet mask and this one really surprised me. It gave my skin a super healthy glow, didn't break me out or dried my skin out. I found this to be a perfect mask before an event, a night out or if you'd like to treat your skin to a good mask. It's soaked in product and applies well on to the skin. I haven't found a sheet mask yet that will properly fit my face so I won't be showing you any pictures (I do so on my Snapchat, if you'd like to have a laugh, I always do a mini review on any sheet mask I try there and embarrass myself in the process - you'll love it! I think LOL). The ingredient list is not as impressive as my usual skincare picks but my skin didn't react badly to it, so I'll give it a pass. I will continue to use the remaining mask, as I genuinely like the the glow it gives me. Full list of ingredients can be found below.

Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Vaccinium Myrtillus Fruit/Leaf Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Beta-Glucan, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Water, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Arbutin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Silica, PEG-14M, Xanthan Gum, Allantoin, Erythritol, Sodium Citrate, Disodium EDTA, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Chlorphenesin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Propanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Illicium Verum (Anise) Fruit Extract, Fragrance (Parfum).

This mask totally surprised me. I only had one so I can't comment on any long term effects but in terms of radiance, I haven't tested anything near this good. I was GLOWING. Yes, glowing to the moon and back. I was amazed how nourished and moisturised my skin felt and how radiant it was. The effects lasted for couple of days too! Shocked as this is fairly inexpensive and you can even get it currently on 3 for 2 sale in Boots. I wrote about it in more detail here, so for ingredient list plus active ingredients, go check out my haul post now.

Forget dull complexion with these sheet masks

Pixi Glow Mist  RPR £16.00 | POST

I haven't really talked too much about it on a blog previously, I don't think (someone fact check me please) but I am so impressed with this little mist. It gives me a lovely glow within kinda look. It can be used as part of skincare or even on top of makeup. This fine mist is superb for setting powder formulas with and will give an instant glow to the skin. I love using it under and over makeup and on days when I'm hot and flustered, it comes handy. It's travel friendly enough so you can just put it in your bag and off you go. This illuminated mist is enriched with 13 natural oils, alongside ingredients such as propolis, aloe vera and fruit extract for the moisturising benefits. I find this helps my post cleansing redness as it not only refreshes but also calms my sensitive skin. It's a great all rounder and I highly recommend you try it. The full ingredients list can be found below.

Water, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Dipropylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Propolis Extract, Niacinamide, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Betaine, Sodium Hyaluronate, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Panthenol, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Illicium Verum (Anise) Fruit Extract, Adenosine, Rose Flower Oil, Tagetes Minuta Flower Oil, Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil, Elettaria Cardamomum Seed Oil, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Leaf Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Vetiveria Zizanoides Root Oil, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil.

I didn't love it at first, I thought it was fine until I tried it over Lacura Caviar Illumination Day Cream.  When I did, it was a love from the second sight. If I could only wear one foundation, it would be this one these days. As I embark on Shop My Stash challenge, where I change the products I use on a weekly basis, I can't really use it all the time sadly. It's sooooo good, I am not exaggerating. If you have dry and dehydrated skin, this foundation will change your life. For those of you wanting to try Becca foundation but doesn't fit your budget, give this one a go instead. It's not available in UK but I linked up to eBay seller I bought it from. Definitely one to watch.

I won this highlighter in an Insta Giveaway ages ago from a beautiful Ting (check out her blog here) and I was underwhelmed. Having already purchased Pearl, I found Champagne Pop to be too golden on me and visible. At that point I used firmer highlighter brushes, such as Sigma Pointed Highlight. I'm currently back to my love with either RT Setting Brush or Morphe Fan Brush, so I picked up Champagne Pop as part of my weekly S?hop My Stash and I fell in love. I don't know if my perception has changed but I adore how it looks now and I'm honestly as impressed as with Pearl. Saying that combination of two is just stunning. This highlighter will stay beautifully on your skin all day long, giving you the most beautiful glow. The formula is so finely milled, with no glitter in sight. Yes, it's super expensive but Becca Highlighters are definitely the best there is, so totally worth the splurge in my opinion. It will suit best fair to medium skin tones, but I can see darker complexions pulling it off nicely too. I'm thinking of doing my Becca Highlighter Collection post, so please let me know if this would be of interest to you.

Have you seen the new launch from Becca? Check out Becca Prismatic Amethyst now

Mary-Lou Manizer & Champagne Pop

theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer RPR £20.00 | POST

I fell in love with Mary-Lou Manizer the moment I got it in my hands oh so long ago now. It truly started my love for highlighters. It's super intensive, light champagne shade with no glitter in sight. It gives the look of that perfectly polished complexion, so when I picked it up as part of my Shop My Stash, I fell in love with it again. I haven't used it in absolute ages because my highlighter collection is slightly out of hands but I'm sure not to forget about it for so long next time. If you're looking for a start up highlighter, I'd take a trip to Superdrug or Debenhams (currently on offer for £18 in Debenhams) to give this one a swatch.

SMOKEY EYE EDIT

If there was one look I wouldn't leave the house without, it's the smokey eye. I'd get up super early to perfect it and there's one palette that inspired me to it. I went for warm shades, sometimes even reds and I loved how they made my eyes pop, how well the eyeshadow lasted and framed my eyes during long days in the office.

Zoeva Matte RPR £17.50 | POST

I think I've sang my praises enough about Zoeva Matte Palette in the post I've done recently. It's by far one of my favourite launches of 2017 and I can imagine, this being considered for yearly faves. It's divine. I love the pigmentation, although it swatches funny. The transfer to the lid is incredible though and makes you forget the swatches. It blends beautifully, doesn't disappear from the lid and if Zoeva added a super pigmented off white and black it would be the perfect palette. I love my warm tones and mattes. As a hooded lip gel with grey eyes, shades as such bring out the colour of my eyes as well as hiding the hood of my eye slightly. It's available exclusively from Zoeva website and shipping is only £2.50 so well worth the shop! Sadly currently out of stock, but you can register your interest here.

Smoke it out with Zoeva Matte Palette

LIPSTICK HOARDER EDIT

By far the best formula Makeup Revolution came up with in terms of lippies that I've tried so far. It goes on super creamy and pigmented, doesn't dry my lips, although this is a personal preference as reviews are mixed here. I love the pinky nude shade, as it's my favourite kind of nude and lasts good 4-6 hours on me depending on what food I eat. I really have no complaints. If you remember Lip Lavas from MUR, which I wasn't;t the biggest fan of, Molten Chocolate, despite the similar design, has a totally different formula that stays put nicely. For £3.00 you really can't go wrong. Also available in Superdrug.

I've been quite vocal about my love for Jeffree Star Liquid Lipsticks and Rose Matter is one shade that I love to wear on the daily. It's a gorgeous rose shade which looks almost statement on my pale self but it will look much lighter on medium and darker complexions. I think the wear time is great, it doesn't overly dry my lips and it's one of those colours I can wear with any eye look. I have quite a few lippies in my collection, so if you'd like to see my opinion on all JS lippies I own, let me know and I'll happily do a Collection post. Back to the lip itself, I feel the formula is one of the best, as even if the lipticks wears off a little, there's absolutely zero problem to touch up during the day. Now widely available on Beauty Bay which makes me so happy. Also, who's waiting for the Adrogyny Palette launch? I can't wait!!! I love my Beauty Killer - POST - so I have high expectations of this one.

Sylveco 2in1 Scrub + Lip Balm RPR £4.50

Forget Lush Lip Scrubs when you're getting ready in the morning. They get so messy, although so delicious in the process. Sylveco Scrub Lip Balm is the answer to my prayers. When applied scrub will polish your lips and then by the time you finish with your eye and face makeup, the scrub will be gone and your lips beautifully moisturised. I really can't recommend it enough. Available soon at The Natural Skincare

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 BEAUTY TRENDS EXPLAINED - FROM CATWALK TO YOUR VANITY

Spring is just around the corner and I think everyone can feel it. It's there, we just need to be patient for a little while longer. This spring will rule out few beauty trends and bring back some others. Catwalks always present a pretty scary version to an every day woman. It's important to read between the lines to understand the vision of
a designer or makeup artist. There's few trends I'll be bringing with me from the catwalks to my vanity, so if you'd like to know more, please continue to read.

Get that glow.

With spring fast approaching it's time to ditch your full coverage heavy bases and invest in light and glowing foundations/ban creams! I love to glow so glowing skin is my cup of tea. There's nothing wrong with wanting both the coverage and the glow and LA Girl Illuminating Foundation & LOreal Pro-Glow Foundation are lately my go to!

If you're skin is perfect on its own, try Becca or Bare Minerals instead! They're super light and we'll give you that coveted no makeup makeup look!

It's ime to invest in a good highlighter to add even more shine to your skin! I've been loving theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer & Becca Champagne Pop lately 💥💥💥

The new minimalism.

This trend is not new but just got a little spring makeover and I for one, couldn't be happier. Dark lips are my favourite and the idea to put my dark berries away until next autumn was making me sad! No more. Dark lip is here to stay. To give it a little spring touch, keep the rest minimal. Glowing skin, brushed up feathered brows, no makeup makeup suits dark lip like no other!

Too scared to play around with gothic vibes? Fear not, it's also super fashionable to wear orange reds again! Yay! I love a good bright orange red like no other red and can't wait to bring back my classic statement lip! Again, keep the base glowing, maybe pair with a little sun kissed skin (aka it's bronzer time!!!) and lots of highlighter!

My picks:
Jeffree Star Designer Blood & Checkmate

The new you eye.

There's so much inspiration coming from catwalks on the daily lately and I've chose some trends that suit my estethics as well as my more playful side.

80s are back!

This makes me so happy to see so much colour on the lid and all over the face! 80s were incredibly tacky so adding a modern twist to the 80s look is a must! Play around with shades. Be that on the lid, instead of contour, on the brows! Sky's a limit. I'm not saying start painting rainbows on your face (although why the hell not?) but maybe pick a shade you're afraid to and make a statement with it? I'll be using my Morphe Brushes 35B palette to create some crazy colourful looks

Peachy!

Peach is the most beautiful colour, it's warm, it's super flattering to any eye colour and just fun to play around' with palettes such as Too Faced Sweet Peach - POST - it's simple, it's modern and you should just go ahead and try it! The most out here combination is see on catwalks Aquamarine + Peach combo which I plan to take advantage of on the holidays to Spain! The makeup this season isn't about perfection. It's a little undone, so even an amateur with brushes, should be able to it off! I'd go for all peachy eye and make it halo by adding aquamarine to the centre of the lid. It'a one of those looks that may seem ridiculous but end up looking glorious!

Elongated half cat eye!

Another variation of your usual cat eye! Perfect for those with hooded eye too! You start your line mid lid and elongate it towards your temple. You can go super dramatic, or easy, but this gives you occasion to yet again play around with makeup and maybe add some colour?

Glitter everything.

I love glitters, I just do! I'm your typical magpie so anything shiny & I just have to have it! Stila came out with liquid Eyeshadows shade which gives plenty shimmer plus the shades are just gorgeous and I'll be buying one or two very soon! Also Inglot's coming out with liquid highlighter like Eyeshadows and with so many beautiful colours to lust over, I may need to pick one (or two lol) up! But for now I'll be sticking to my Makeup Revolution Eye Foils and Inglot AMC Pure Pigments to add the most beautiful shine to my lids

In terms of glitter we have glitter lids, bottom lash line, glitter mascaras, glitter brows, lips and even beards so whatever floats your boat, just sprinkle some glitter over it & have fun! I've been loving this OCC glitter lately! It's quite incredible!

For your day to day basic, I'd probably stick to some glitter on the lid, unless you're a lucky duck who doesn't work in the office! I've seen glitter lips everywhere now so maybe adding a touch of glitter to the mid of your lips, instead of gloss, will give you a refreshing new look! Try it and tell me glitter isn't awesome!?

Beach hair + micro braids!

Ok so there's really no telling which catwalk look to follow but I'm a huge fan of not treating my hair to heat so beach waves are what my hair gets on the daily! I use a bit of Oribo Texturising Spray to add more volume and sleep in couple of braids to accentuate the usual waves in my hair.

This season I'll be adding some micro braids to the look! I loved it on the catwalk and I think it looks very festival friendly, yet inconspicuous to be able to pull it off every day!

I hope you enjoyed my babbling today. I'd love to see your spring/summer 2017 inspirations, so tag me on Twitter & Instagram, using hashtag #beautydramaqueen. Can't wait to see what look you'll be sporting!

PEACH, PLEASE

Peach in beauty

2017 should be renamed as a year of peach. Peachy shades are everywhere, from makeup, through fashion to hair. Peach, the warmest of pastels suits practically anyone. In makeup, peachy lips suit mostly warmer toned skin whilst peachy eyeshadows will bring out the tones of blue, green and grey. It's one shade everyone should embrace at least once! Today, I'm sharing with my peachy favourites.
