Affordable eyeshadow base - new Maybelline Color Tattoos Creamy Matte range (+ Leather Effect), do they really work?

Hi Ladies. It's another gloomy day here in UK but I'm having an excellent day. I'm working till late afternoon and then I'm off to see a friend for a little evening at the spa (and a sleepover- enter excited, dancing emojis here). Weekend will be a busy one too, with a birthday party on a Saturday so I'm busy typing my weekends posts to make sure they publish while I'm having a blast/curing a hangover whichever comes first lol.

I have waited patiently for new Maybelline Color Tattoos to launch here in UK. And once they did, I was super excited to pick them up :) It was 3for2 offer in Boots, so I picked up 2 new Creamy Matte shades as well as good, old Leather Effect in Creamy Beige.

First impressions? Well as per usual they come in lovely glass pots with the colour and range clearly displayed on the lids. And here comes the tricky part. Whatever colour you think you see on a lid is a little different to what you'll get when swatching them on the back of your hand (and by little I mean A LOT DIFFERENT). Do I mind? A little, yes. It's a little false advertising especially where it's difficult to find a tester in Boots.

Formula. I'm so used to shimmer Color Tattoos to have a very good pigmentation, that these have been a little disappointing. They offer a good pigmentation, just not a great one. The winner being Color Tattoo Leather Effect in Creamy Beige, followed closely by Color Tattoo Creamy Matte in Crème de Rose. Out of the three Crème de Nude have the weakest pigmentation (you can see it on swatches below). Back to formula itself, all seem to be of very creamy consistency which means you need to apply with a light hand. If you use too much they may crease on you throughout the day. I find that if you set it with a little powder (especially in the crease) you will avoid it altogether.

Application. They are very easy to apply and a little goes a long way. I find that with Crème de Nude I tend to apply it all over the lid up to a brow bone whilst others only all over the lid and in the crease due to their respective colours.

From the bottom: Creamy Beige, Crème de Rose, Crème de Nude (natural light, no flash)

Crème de Nude - light matte beige with yellow undertone. Pigmentation is a little weaker than in the others, however it still works beautifully to prime the lid and cover any redness, veins etc

Crème de Rose - light ashy pink. Pigmentation is great, works great to prime the lid and it can be used on it's own, given you set it with powder. It will work great for those makeup no makeup days when you just want your lids to look natural, just a little better, if you know what I mean :) I have to admit this is my favourite of them all :)

Creamy Beige - very light ashy brown. Pigmentation is great. This colour was the biggest surprise as I thought I will be getting a beige and it's nowhere close. It does work well, you can use it as a base or on it's own (again - don't forget to set it even if just in the crease).

I like the formula of Color Tattoos and these don't go too far from the originals. I must admit I love Crème de Rose. I find the colour the closest to my natural colour of the eye lid so it works beautifully as a base for me. It is not something I would use for a long day though. It will prolong your eyeshadow by few hours, sure, but they are nowhere close to the perfection that is Urban Decay Primer Potion. If you are a beginner and looking to update your collection by a good base, look no further. These will work great. If you have a very oily eye lid, I wouldn't recommend it unless you set them well with the powder and even then I can't guarantee the results. For me they're getting 3 out of 5*. Definitely worth their price and as a huge Color Tattoo fan I would probably re-purchase but as I said there are few bits that annoy me with them.

What do you think ladies? Have you had a chance to try them yet? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Thank you for reading.
Love,

Dorota x

  1. I have Creamy Beige and LOVE it! I always use it on its own on top of primer. I usually apply a thin layer on the mobile lid and up into the crease with a MAC 217 and it lasts all day.

    1. I have tested them as bases but now use them on top of UD primer and to enhance colour of my eyeshadows on top :) I love Creme de Rose. It's so perfect :)

  3. A few months ago I really wanted Creamy Beige but I always realise I hardly ever use brown shades on my lid. I've never seen Creme de Rose before, it looks gorgeous, now I'm tempted again to get some Color Tattoos. Thanks for the review! :)

    1. Thank you hun x

I have quite a collection of color tattoos. Did another post on my collection before but I wanted one try these new ones Crème de nude and Crème de Rose as an alternative to MAC Paint Pots. I really adore Crème de Rose. It's my favourite of them all. I wouldn't never wear these alone, only to advance powder eyeshadow that goes on top 😊 happy shopping to you x

  4. I haven't seen the Matte range in my local Boots yet, so need to keep checking it. I'm not the biggest fan of Color Tattoos but I wanted to try the matte one as a base for eyeshadows :) x

    1. As I mentioned in the post it doesn't fully work for me as a base alone. I may try applying it after UD primer but that sort of makes it pointless doesn't it? I used Crème de Rose today under Naked 3 for a natural look and it lasted fairly well tbh x
